I guess I am not clear on what I am looking for.
I am looking for a discussion  thread to have the subject and all its
replies within the same webpart.. I don't want to click on the
subject, then be taken to another page..I am hoping for it to have
like a plus symbol, expanding out the replies to the subject.
Similar to how a newsgroup runs..I am looking in Sharepoint 2003
book and it displays it that way (however I am running 2007). It is
driving me absolutely insane that I cannot figure out a way to do
this.
If there is a custom discussion thread webpart out there that would
be great too, but I cannot find one.
So..any ideas now?

1) Create a custom view  of the discussion  list with the columns,
sorting, filtering, etc that you want to display.

2) Add the discussion list  as a webpart on the page of your choosing.

3) Set the webpart properties to your custom view.

4) View the finished webpart on your page

Here it goes:
1. Add discussion  board - currently uses "Subject" view.
2. Go to create  new view.
3. Select threaded  view.
4. Gave it a name and made it the defualt view
5. Added Subject and modified by and body
6. Left all else alone.
7. Hit save
8. Go back to modify webpart
9. My new view  is not available to me to select  - so..I went into
Subject view and changed it to threaded then selected subject view
when I modified the web part.
10. Now I have entered a topic. The last column says "threading".
It shows my topic and the body of the message.
11. Now I reply..No replies in thread..What the heck am I doing
wrong?

promote the view  to a top level view.
Then it should show up in the webparts views

I have a problem with discussion  threads.
Some post only show the first several line of a post & others show
the entire post. It's not consistant. How do I control when & how
this happens? I'd like to show just the top 3-6 lines of each post &
then allow the user to select  it if he wants to view  the entire thing.
