Disable sharepoint site as Network drive?

Asked By: Colin    Date: Dec 12    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 3362

By mapping the sharepoint site as a network drive I was able to
navigate to a document, edit it and save it without checking it out.

Do you know how to close this version control hole?

Yes, you can disable  the Web Client service on the SharePoint server.

Actually, this won't help WebClient is to allow the workstation (or actually
server in this case) to browse webDAV. The only way I know of blocking the
network access is to block the webdav verbs.

Actually, to solve the problem that was originally brought up, namely mapping  a network  drive, what I described is a solution. However, you are correct, webdav is another way that modifying files gets around some 'rules'. Disabling webdav in IIS is the way to go.

Let me be more specific. It will not solve the problem. It would only solve the problem if you disabled the service on EVERY workstation. The problem is that WebClient talks to WebDAV. Disabling WebClient on the server will have no impact on SharePoint’s exposing WebDAV to the clients.

… and stepping back even further … this is no less secure than the web interface – it doesn’t require checkouts either.

with GPO im positive you can disable  user being able to map drives, but the good
old "\\" from the explorer will get right past it.. i imagine with GPO you could
probrably break that however as well.

Check outs are not required in V2, so this hole exists whether you
access the doc library from a mapped drive  or the browser UI.
