Difference between area and site in sharepoint portal

can nybody help me with wats the difference between area and site in
sharepoint portal , ie wen i create a new subarea or a new sites in
portal wat benfits or difference will it make

The main differences are in classification and security options. Areas are
considered part of the portal, and therefore are indexed as Portal_Content.
Sites are really WSS sites  and indexed as Nonportal_Content accrding to the
options set in the Sites list. The security difference  is that Areas can only
set security at the area  level, while sites can set it at the list/library
level.
