How to determine the number of portals that our farm configuration can handle?

Asked By: Hector    Date: Dec 15    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 10047

I am trying to determine the number of portals that our farm
configuration can handle.

Our setup is as such - 2 servers for the webfarm (web, search, job,
and index) and one for database server. I am trying to determine with
this configuration how many portals we can have? Any info will be
much appreciated. Thanks

There are quite a few sources available about SPS 2K3 capacity planning all with varying information. For example in the book (Microsoft Sharepoint Products and Technology Resource Kit), it specifies this "With Shared Services enabled, you will be able to host up to 100 portal sites on a SINGLE server  without incurring a performance penalty". In an article from the TechNet site titled "Capacity Planning for Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003" it states that a MEDIUM farm  (4 computers) can host up to 25 portal sites using shared services. Wow, there is a big difference here...a medium farm hosting less portal sites than a single server?...how?
