Desktop Shortcut For Sharepoint

Asked By: Pamela    Date: Sep 24    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1615

Have a wee bit of a problem that I'd like input from the coding
guru's out there.

My company has developed an intranet portal, utilizing MS sharepoint
portal server. The portal is accessed by users through internet
explorer only. I am now tasked with creating a desktop shortcut for
the user's, to access the portal.

This in itself is not difficult : With vbscript, I can check the
user's desktop folder and if the shortcut does not exist, create it
with the wscript createshortcut method. So far, so good.

The problem begins in that I now have the following request: The
shortcut should open the internet portal page if it is not already
open, or if it is open it should be focused instead of opening a new
instance. (Similar to the functionality when hitting the ms outlook
shortcut... it won't open multiple instances but will bring outlook
to the forefront if the process is running on the machine.)

The next difficulty factor lies in that I can't control the window
name of the portal page, because it is generated by sharepoint. Hence
depending on where the user is in the portal, the window name will be
different. IS THERE A WAY TO SPECIFY THE BROWSER WINDOW NAME OTHER
THEN THE DEFAULT, WHICH IS THE TAB NAME?

( As I kluge, I've considering creating a link to an asp page that
checks every possible ie window name for the portal, and focus if it
exists.) Some interesting problems erupt here: How do I close the
window if does find the portal - (since that browser instance won't
be a popup and have no parent?) Also what if the user is at another
web site that has the same name - such as "home".)

Checking to see if the process is running, is also fruitless... It
will be iexplorer.exe regardless of where the browser is pointing.

Any thoughts on the best way to tackle this problems?
