Deployment Question

I have 5 different locations of my company (5 different states) that
are connected with T1 lines.

What is the best way to deploy SPS throughout the company? Each
location will need access to the other locations documents and will
need to be able to check-in/check-out and modify the documents.

However, we want to keep the documents at each location instead of
downloading them to our one SPS server at the main location.

Do we need to have separate SPS servers at each location (which would
be okay)? And if so, how would we then access each server so that
each location can use the document management tools?

What you need to do is to setup content sources for each SharePoint
server at each site. Since you're going to have 5 sites, each site will
have 4 content sources setup to point to the other 4 sites. The content
sources are used to crawl the other sites. It does not put a copy of it
on your local SharePoint server, it just creates an index so that when
users come in to perform a search, it will query the local vault as well
as the content sources.
