Deletion problem in lists

Asked By: Stevie    Date: Jul 24    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 625

(Adds additional diagnostic detail to a similar item posted earlier
in MS WSS newsgroup, to which there was no response. Any clues here?)

DELETE of list items on our development WSS server fails with
a "Cannot complete action" message if the following are ALL true:

-- The list is created from an Issues list template.
-- The name of the "Title" field (which is undeletable as a default
field) has been changed to another name.
-- 3 or 4 fields have been added to the list structure. There seems
to be some point at which the size of the field labels and field
options (if a Choice field) push it over the breaking point. In
other words, if you have very sparse Choice options you can add more
fields before you reach the breaking point. I am still WAY under the
maximum column limits in a WSS list.

When DELETE does suddenly stop working, the problem will go away if
you change the label of the Title field back to "Title". I thought
perhaps it was simply because the label became shorter, but it will
also not work if the field label is "Titl" or "T" or anything other
than "Title". When you restore the name to "Title", you can then
continue to add a lot more fields without problems.

This issue does NOT exist on our production box. I'm thinking it
must be (1) a server code corruption issue of some kind or (2) some
issue related to the db. Ideas anyone?
