Default Install "News" area

Asked By: Elvis    Date: Sep 16    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 903

So, on the default install, the News area has portal listing but those
listings appear on the Home area's default page and the Home area's
portal listings appear over on the right under the heading "Links for

That's all okay but I'd like to know how that webpart in Home area
gets it's data from the portal listings in the News area and how I
might be able to duplicate that action using another source area
and/or target area.

Sometimes, one must wonder.

On the Webparts in question there is an Area Override option at the top of the toolpart.

There are 4 webparts that are all really the same, just with different default  settings..

news  for You
- News
links  for You
- Grouped Listings

They all display portal  Listings, just with different groupings and a few changes to other settings. Each of these webparts has a "Current area  Override" at the top of the tool pane. You may notice that the Current Area Override at the top of the News Webparts just points to the news area. The "links/news For You" Webparts just have the group by setting set to Audience to target  the same portal listings  to specific users.

I hadn't noticed the commonality of those four Web Parts before. The
Grouped Listing Web Part has tons of options that enable it to show Area
Listings in many, many variants, including roll-up like functionality
for a given number of levels.
