Dead webpart that I can not remove

Asked By: Chaim    Date: Sep 24    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1542

I seem to have a webpart on a page that is corrupted some how.
I can not edit or remove it from the page and it is causing the
members of the site to get a "access denied" error when trying to
open the site.

The symptoms are:
Access denied to members of the site but not for me as the full
control admin.
it is an "image web part" that points to a .gif file within the
site's image picture library.
When I go to the site actions - edit page and click on the edit
button of the webpart there is NO drop down list.
If I click on the X to close it I get an unexpected error.
Once I get this error, any action on the edit page gives me the same

How can I remove this from the site seeing as the edit page is not
allowing me to do so?

Go to the web  part maintenance page  and remove  it from there.

If your regular url is http://server/sites/foo/default.aspx go here
instead: http://server/sites/foo/default.aspx?contents=1. You should
be able to remove it from there.

The ?contents=1 trick works for every web  part page.
Don't be so hard on yourself, we all had to learn it at some point.
