In this case, would it be possible to use a "People" field in your
list, instead of the field type that you currently have?
This would, of course, mean that everyone in that column would have
to have existing accounts in your active directory. This might not
be feasible for you, but I use lots of workflows that send email to
people in "People" fields, and it works fine.
