customizing files in template\layouts folder

Asked By: Raymond    Date: Feb 23    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1009

We've copied files from:

Local_Drive:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server
Extensions\ 60\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS

to another location and then modified IIS to point to this new
location. This allows us to customize these files for a specific
portal (IIS Website), while leaving the originals intact.

However I am concerned that this may cause us problems when service
packs and upgrades occur. The site we customized will not get the
changes since its not in the "installed" location. Correct?

The way that files  in the 60 Hive are organized, you shouldn't need to
move them. You can create your own Site Definitions and place all
customizations can be placed into a ..\60\TEMPLATE\1033\Custom
directory.

Can you define what you are trying to change?

We currently have 3 portals on the one server. The main reason for
this technique was to enable us to make look and feel changes to one
portal without effecting the other.
