Customization Help

Asked By: Vaasu    Date: Sep 17    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 682

We're getting ready to do some customization with sharepoint from creating web
parts to creating new aspx pages to touching the database and adding stored
procedures. Are there areas or certain tables or databases that should not be
touched or modified that anybody can recommend? I'm kinda looking for a "No No

As a general rule the following will break supportability:

1) Changes or additions to any of the SPS or WSS created databases, including
tables, stored procs, etc
2) Changes to out-of-the-box site/list/area templates (copy and modify the copy

There are others, these are the biggies.

I would avoid modifying the database  like the plague. I think modifications to
the templates (particularly SPS and its derivatives) is ok as long as source
control is used - and in fact to accomplish many customizations to SPS you must
edit the OOB templates. But I see little reason to touch the databases. If you
need additional meta data, create a new database and store it there.

And just for completeness here is a KB article from Microsoft that makes
the "unsupported" statement official.

In agreement with that - as a no no list the SPS/WSS databases  (_PROF, _SERV and
_SITE) should be the first three things on it. To change the look & feel of SPS
substantially, you do need to modify the template aspx  files (be warned though
that there's an awful lot of admin aspx pages  in the layouts folder that will
still have the default look/layout), but they are easy enough to restore/version
