Customization

I am very much interested to develop my company's
Intranet portal home page similar to this site:
www.sharepointcustomization.com/.../default.aspx.
I am eagerly waiting to know how they customized it.
You can see the left navigation bar, Links on
Financial Division section. Can anyone put some light
on that. Usually how can i customize my portal that it
looks entirely different like that of this site.

Hi all, can anyone tell me how much of the Sharepoint portal page
(default.aspx) can be customized? And if it can be done what
functionality would one loose?
