Custom workflow e-mail referencing person column returns account not

We have a SPD workflow that sends an e-mail. In the body of the e-mail
we pull in a list column defined as a Person type. When the e-mail is
sent it's inserting the ad account value, e.g. domain\username, rather
than the user name as displayed in the list.

How do we get the name in the e-mail?
