Custom Field Type properties disappear?

  Asked By: Owen    Date: Dec 19    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 2325

I've created a custom field type (the one from
Single Line of Text with RegEx validation), that has 2
custom properties, one for the RegEx string and one for the error
message.

It works fine, however if I go back and edit the column, the 2 custom
properties revert to the DisplayName value from the FieldType element.

So if I enter a RegEx property of (^\d{5}$)|(^\d{5}-\d{4}$) it works,
but if I go back and edit the column the RegEx value becomes "Regular
Expression" and the value I entered in before is gone?

Did I miss something?

I made a mistake, when you go back  and edit  the column  the property
values change to the name of the property  with "field value." added to
it.

For instance, the Regular Expression property returns "Regular
Expression field  value." instead of the value entered.

Here's an example of the property schema for the FieldType if it helps.

<PropertySchema>
<Fields>
<Field Name="RegularExpression"
DisplayName="Regular Expression"
MaxLength="255" DisplaySize="35" Type="Text">
<Default></Default>
</Field>
<Field Name="ExceptionMessage"
DisplayName="Exception Message"
MaxLength="255" DisplaySize="35" Type="Text">
<Default></Default>
</Field>
</Fields>
</PropertySchema>

Turns out it's a bug in SharePoint:

The April 12 service pack fixed the problem for me:

I didn't see the original post or I woulda chimed in...

Yep, it's a known bug. However, there isn't a service pack our for WSS
v3 yet. They KB article is for the hotfix that you must call PSS to get.

This hotfix also fixes the following issues:
* 934253 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934253/) The Web File
Properties dialog box displays incorrect properties  for a document that
is saved in a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 document library
* 934882 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934882/) A file that is
attached to an e-mail message is not put in a Windows SharePoint
Services 3.0 document library
* 934613 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934613/) Error message when
you try to install a feature in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0: "The
'UserSelectionMode' attribute is not allowed"
* 935605 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935605/) Issues that may occur
when you use the volume shadow copy service (VSS) reference writer in
Windows SharePoint Services 3.0
