Custom Field Type

Asked By: Anushka    Date: Oct 14    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1085

I am working on a Custom Field Type and I have run into a road block.
I need to create a column very similar to a calculated column.
Currently my field inheriting from SPFieldNumber because it needs to
"be" a number. Mostly because numeric view aggregations are not
available for calculated columns. The problem is I can't find where to
do the calculation. I tried to override the Value property of the
FieldRenderingControl, but that is only used when an item is edited
form the web interface. Microsoft does it somehow (calculated fields)
I just can't find the right method to override.

Sorry, I don't understand your question. Why are you trying to "do the
calculation"? Are you sure that this can't be accomplished using out of
the box functionality?

My ultimate goal is to be able to use the Totals section of a view  to
calculate the average of a calculated  number. The problem  is that out
of the box calculated columns  do not show up in the Totals section. My
proposed solution to this is to create  a custom  field type  inheriting
from SPFieldNumber that mimics the functionality of a calculated column
for numbers only.
