Creating subdirectories automatically

We are looking at a system that will require a forlder for each person, with
subfolders for each folder. Is there a way to automatically create those
subfolders, every time a new folder is created in a document library? Obviously,
using metadata instead of folders is a work around, but I'm looking for a way to
automatically 'provision' a folder every time a new one is created.

You're venturing way into custom code territory here. I would think either
a custom workflow or an event receiver should do the trick.

Beyond coding such behavior in an event I cannot think of a way to do so from
the GUI or through SPDesigner.
