Creating Sub-Site List Dynamic Link on Top Level Site Homepage

I am new to the board. I have a couple of questions regarding SPS
2003
and thought you might be able to Help. I'm an analyst (NOT a
developer)
trying to roll out SPS 2003 to our team of business analysts so that
it
acts like a specific document repository for business
requirements/designs under one top-level site (let's call it T).
Every
functionality/design area has a specific sub-site under T for ease of
permissioning, which is very important here. I have admin rights at T
as well.

I'm having some problems tweaking the interface. First, I'd like to
make the list of sub-sites (NOT top-level sites) appear on T's
homepage
(similar to "spotlight sites" on a portal area), but have no
knowledge
of XML to make custom lists. Is there an easy way to do this and
perhaps add custom columns as to which user created the subsite,
when,
etc.?

Second, I can't get the search functionality at T level to pick up
documents within the sub-sites, or return sub-site titles. Can the
search be configured to return aspx page titles or content within the
sub-sites?

I would appreciate it if someone could give me a few tips.
