Creating sites via Object Model

Asked By: Srikant    Date: Apr 26    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1021

I am trying to develop an application that creates WSS sites
programmatically. I have a standalone WSS v3 beta install on my
laptop and have a MOSS 2007 install on a server. When I run my
application on my laptop I can create child sites under a parent site.
(http://<my computer name>/sites/parent/)

However, once I try to create sites on the server
(http://<moss server>/sites/parent/)

*(Keep in mind that I'm still running the code off my laptop)

I get the following error:

The Web Application at <http://<moss server>/sites/parent/> could not
be found. Verify that you have typed the URL correctly. If the URL
should be serving existing content, the system administrator may need
to add a new request URL mapping to the intended application.

Do I actually have to run my code on the MOSS sever for it to find
the parent site?

You won't be able to access the object  model unless the code is run
on the server(web app, web part). An alternative would be a
webservice on the server.

Your solution of a web service makes
sense, and I was planning on doing this in the future. I was just
experimenting with site creation using my test app and was puzzled
that it couldn't find the site.
