Creating site within a publishing site - is there a way to change the default.aspx page layout?

Asked By: Akhila    Date: Oct 19    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 933

I've created some custom page layouts for a WCM site - when creating a new site in the hierarchy there is no way to specify what page layout gets used for default.aspx, the standard welcome page layout is used. Can anyone think of a way to do this?

Reason being that my client will be creating lots of the sub-sites themselves, and I want to make the process as simple for them as possible. I thought I might be able to do it with site templates but I can't see a way to create one in a publishing portal (at least, the option doesn't appear in the same place as for a collaboration portal).

if you want to save a site  template within publishing  site collection you do the following:

add "/_layouts/savetmpl.aspx" behind your URL.

So you will have something like this: http://servernameortnumber/_layouts/savetmpl.aspx and there you will be able to save a template.
