Creating portal on 50% received Operation Failure Portal creation

Asked By: Jackson Davis         Date: Jan 23, 2010      Category: Sharepoint      Views: 202

I am trying to create a portal. I get through 50% when I get Operation Failure
message:
Portal creation failed.
I am running Windows Server 2003 Standard/SQL Server 2000 SP3a and a trial
version of SharePoint Portal 2003. Server collation – Latin1-Geeneral,
case-sensitive, accent-sensitive, karatype-sensitive, width-sensetive.
The portal creation log is not that helpful. The first sign of a problem I see
a message:
Portal creation exception (status=PortalAdminJobStatusFailed)
System.NullReferenceException:Object reference not set to an instance of an
object.

The trial version may be trying to use MSDE.

Do you get a prompt for whether or not to use SQL?

I the configuration Database server  I have specified the SQL Server name. I
would also add that this is a stand alone server and it has no Exchange. Does
it matter?
