Creating doc library to enforce keywords

I have a request to create a document library that contains a predefined set of keywords that will require a user to select at least one keyword when adding a document. So, my thought is to add columns to a document library list that give the user a selection of keywords to choose from. That should satisfy the base requirement. Then, I will need to add it to only one of my 6 virtual servers so it shows up as an option when creating a new document library.

Anyone done this before? Anything I’m overlooking in this seemingly simple task?

Is this document library for WSS or SPS? In WSS you would simply
save the new doc Lib as a template. If needed, you could then export
that and import it into other WSS virtual servers.

If for SPS, this gets tricky because you have to modify the site
definitions on the server file system and add the new dob lib to the
appropriate site template(s).

It is for WSS only.

Another part to the keyword requirement is that there will be a second field for “sub keywords” that should populate from a second list, based on the top level keyword selected. I am trying to figure out now how to make that conditional without doing any coding. I guess you could say it is a hierarchical choice of keywords like this:

So when a user selects Computing as the keyword, a second drop-down list populates with the Sub Keywords from this list. Looking now online to find the easiest way to make this happen so I’m totally open (and hopeful) for suggestions!

My plan is to save it as a template when everything works as requested.

SPS can use list Templates too. The trick is that you must create
one STP for each type of Area (eight OOB) you want to create that type
of list and load all the STPs into the List Template Gallery in the Home
Area of each portal.

A full solution to this exact requirement is described in Stacy Draper's
new book from Addison Wesley press. I think is is Chapter 4.
