Creating a custom Edit With .dll for Sharepoint

Has anyone successfully created a custom edit with dll so that they can
select edit with "Custom App", automatically check out the document,
edit it, and save it back to sharpeoint with revision info?

Similar to the way word, excel, files are handled?

Basically creating the file(s) need to set the OpenControl value to
OpenControl="Sharepoint.MyOpenDocumentApp" in DOCICON.XML
