I am trying to create a new content source which references a file share. I have been successful in creating the content source if the file share is 1) on the same server as the SharePoint installation and 2) on another SharePoint web server. However, I am unable to create a content source when the file share is on a shared network drive on another non-web server. Is this possible? I had read a post on a Google group that suggested that a web server must be running on the server that contains the file share OR a virtual directory must be created on the SharePoint box that points to the file share on another server.
