Created by information not showing

Asked By: Carolyn    Date: Apr 03    Category: MOSS    Views: 937

Our "created by" and "modified by" information does not show up for all
users. Does anyone know how these fields are controlled for users?
How can I make this information display for all users?

First of all, which version are you talking about?

Second, which of the following situations apply to you?

1.) Is the column showing  up for some people but not others?
If so then make sure that the users  are looking at the same view.
The modified  by and created  by columns are not shown by default in
most instances. You have to explicitly change the view.

2.) Are the columns showing up at all?
3.) Is the column showing up but the fields  are all blank?
4.) The colum is showing up but some created by/modified by fields are
not showing up.

We are running MOSS 2007, Trial Release.

When I go into a specific view for a list, I see who created  and
modified the item. But we want other people in other departments to
approve items based on their content. When I log on as someone else
(with or without the same permissions as myself) and the modified  by and
created by fields  are not shown. The columns are in the view but there
is no data in the column.

How does sharepoint control who gets to see these fields? I don't think
it is by permissions, because I can log on with someone with the same
permissions and they cannot see these fields.

Any thoughts?

So the column header is showing  up on the page the data is just
empty... I don't see how if you log on as someone with the exact
same permissions that the column would not show  up for them. Are
you sure that the URL is exactly the same with both users? Usually
when you expose data through a view its an all or nothing scenario
(at least in 2003). If they can see the other data on the page they
should be able to see it all.

Is this portal or WSS?

Yes. The column shows up for everyone, however the data shows up only
for a select few. For the people who do not get data, they do not get
any data on any of the records, every item is blank. I have tried
giving people "Full Control" and that doesn't work.

I finally figured out what was going on.

I have my list of Contacts, Announcements and Calendar. One of the
fields in each of the lists is modified  By. I can see the contents of
that column on all items, but others with the same permissions to the
Contact, Announcement and Calendar lists cannot see any information  in
that field. I noticed that the "Modified By" column was of the type
"People or Group". I went into the People and Group list, gave the
individuals "Full Control" for the "People and Group" list (which I
REALLY, REALLY DO NOT WANT TO DO) and now they can see the modified by
column in all lists on the site.

Can you enlighten me with a better solution, or am I stuck with what
I've got?

We are on MOSS 2007
