Create sites off Root URL, not in /Sites?

Asked By: Johnpaul    Date: Feb 14    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1232

Is there a supported way to create WSS Sites off the root url, instead
of off /sites?
Here are details on what I have done so far:
-Created a new virtual server to host wss sites
-extended it in wss
-In selecting the extended site, I choose the team site template.
Question: Should the root be used as a site? are there are
disadvantages to using the root?

-So now I have a wss url with a site at the root:
http://servername:port/default.aspx
-Next I create a top-level website. My only options are to create it
under Sites, or to use a URL, which is at the root, which is already
taken. So my option is to create under sites leaving me with:
http://servername:port/sites/test/default.aspx

Without using front page, can I have all sites created off the root,
and not after /sites?
Please let me know if you have thoughts on this, sounds like it should
be easy to do but I am not sure it is.
