create a new SharePoint library document via URL

I have a user that has a created a form in Word and saved it as the default
document template in their library. They would like to create a link on our
non-SharePoint intranet portal CMS that essentially acts as though the "New
document" button was clicked on the document library.

I.e. - they don't want users to be required to first navigate to the document
library and click "New" to open their form, but to click a URL, have Word open
with a new document (Document1) based on the default library template.

I've tried using a DOTX file instead of DOCX and creating a link to the template
stored at \document library\forms\template.dotx, but SharePoint assumes you want
to edit the template itself instead of instantiating a new doc based on the

By the way, we are using Word instead of Infopath for this form because they
have a requirement to use "track changes" extensively.
