Create extra portal site in SPS 2003

Asked By: Ganesh    Date: Oct 14    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 756

I am trying to follow the steps in the SharePoint Resource Kit book that
explains about "Adding Portal Sites". I follow all the steps to create a new Web
Site and am getting an unsuccessful completion in the web server creation
wizard. The message I'm getting is that the file already exists.
This is the information I'm using:
1) IP address = All Unassigned
2) TCP port = 80
3) Host header = same name used by main portal
4) Path = new folder under wwwroot folder
5) Clear check box for "Allow anonymous access to this Web site"
6) Web site permissions = default (Read, Run scripts)

Do I need to use a different port number?

Given the approach we take to setup secondary portals, the Host Header name
needs to be a CNAME alias in DNS for the original server/portal name ...not
the same name used by the main portal. The CNAME needs to be different from
server name and the default portal  name (if you also use Host Headers for
the main portal).

The Host Header is configured (usually) on port 80 so users can simple enter
the CNAME alias to access the secondary portal.

Do I do the same thing if I need to create  2 or 3 more portal  sites? I thought I
read somewhere that you can only have one CNAME to a name. Do you know if this
is true? If it is then what other options do I have?

In DNS, I'm not aware of any limit in terms of the number of CNAMEs you can
have for a particular server name. We've had at least 10 at a time.
