Create alerts on the list if you set them to read only

Asked By: Anna Reed         Date: Sep 04, 2008      Category: Sharepoint      Views: 295

The problem is that if you set the list items to let users only edit there own
items and can only read their own items in a list, then they can't set alerts on
said item. Great, i want that. the problem is that they can still see the alerts
link on the toolbar and in the item dropdown list.

This blog by Bryan Worthy tells it like it is:

Does anyone know how to remove this alert me from the menus?

I'm confused. Why would you want to alert  a user when something shows up
that he can't even see?

You can probably hide the Alerts menu item  with a bit of CSS, though I
haven't tested that yet.

I don't want to alert  the user, it kills me that the link shows up at all, I
want to hide the alerts  from showing up. The problem  being that it shows up
everywhere. In the dropdown  for each item  in the list  that the user can see, in
the item menu, and in the list item menu.

CSS sounds like it might work for at least one of these three places, I'll check
it out now.
