Crawling never stops for Portal_Content index...

Asked By: Karen    Date: Sep 13    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 9848

I am working on a small server farm,
W2k3 R2 web server and a seperate W2k3 server with SQL Server 2005.
Index crawl status of Portal_content index is always in 'Crawling'.
Schedules are set to once a
week; new index crawl does not start according to schedule, but sits
queue. I will have to restart the service to crawl again (i can see
documents added; when I restart service). Crawl completes
successfully for Non_Portal_Content index.

Indexing issue started a month of the site in production. There are
configuration changes before the day it stopped working.

I restored the production data to another similar small server farm
config. and the problem exists.

I restored the production data to my desktop; which is single server
farm w2k3 server and it works fine.

If I hard reset Portal_Content index, it crawls and the following
event is registered:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Microsoft SharePointPS Search Service
Event Category: Gatherer
Event ID: 3014
Date: 7/5/2006
Time: 3:56:01 PM
User: N/A
An exception occurred. ID: 8. This is an internal error. Reproduce
error with the debugger attached and enable exceptions, then contact
product support. One of the components loaded in your system is bad.
You may be able to avoid the problem by recreating the index.

after which; the gatherer log event status message that appears
consistently when the crawling is complete and status is
in 'crawling'.

Any clues are appreciated. MS folks please help.

I had something similar happen when I was close to running out of disk space. Check both your index  server and your sql  server.
