CPU Overload when indexing

Asked By: Meera    Date: Mar 17    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1038

we have some severe Problems concerning the indexing of SPS. Each time a
crawl starts the CPU Usage goes up to 100%. We have several huge shares to
crawl. Each crawl lasts about an hour or so. The CPU is 550 Mhz and RAM is 1
GB. We get some errors and some crawls will not start and the backup will
not work.

Is there any way to do away with those probs except bying a stronger CPU?

If you have a very small box (say K6-2-350) with at least 256MG RAM, you can
offload the indexing  to that server. If the shares  you are indexing are really
big, you may need to add RAM to that box (about 128MG for every 100K doc
versions). That would offload the problem economically.

You can also use the scheduler to stagger when each content source is
indexed ...e.g. one per night, etc.
