copying file properties into sharepoint

How can we import a files properties into sharepoint.
I have folders named by project and i want to make those the attributes
of the files that are in the folder
then i want to import those files into library with the metadata
properties already there.

eg there is the author and keywords and comments as part of the
propeties of the a file, how can i use these to get data from file
foldres into sharepoint.

I believe there are some 3rd party apps that will do this, but nothing out
of the box.

You can upload multiple files  at a time and then open the library  in
Datasheet view to bulk edit the column that you want to be equal to the
Project name from the folder. You can even get an Excel worksheet setup
with equivalent data  first and then cut and paste multiple rows and columns
at a time.

Or you could write a program using the SharePoint object model that would
set these properties  programmatically.
