control versioning?

Asked By: Kari    Date: Aug 07    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 997

I recently noticed a posting put up in 2004.

Below was the question:

Does anyone know how I can upload a newer version of a document into a
wss doc lib and simultaneously modify certain metadata properties at
the same time? I have a doc lib containing docs with a custom column
entitled 'Version', which is a choice i.e. P1, P2, P3, A, B, C etc.
I want to be able to edit the document and update the version column
at the same time. Whenever I try this with the document checked out, I
get the error that I cannot update metadata with the doc checked out.
I have to upload the newer document, then check it in, then modify the
metadata afterwards, but this has the effect that version control
updates twice., so I get 2 previous versions instead of one for every
update. How can I perform the updates so that I only get one 'version
controlled' update version created?

I have read that there are alot of FrontPage RPC responses, but nothing that clearly outlines a process on how to resolve this issue.
I have the exact same situation that I need to try and resolve.

I have not been successful in getting only a single version to
increment. Do let us know if you discover a technique that works.

Do you have the same question? I don’t have a ready answer other than this is one of the known pain points for WSS.
