Is it possible to take do a content deployment from:

https://staging.company.com/sites/abc << Intranet

and deploy it to

We have been told that it needs to be the same url for it to work. If this is
so, could we use and AAM or redirect on the Internet side?

Are you using Chris O'Brien's content  deployment wizard from codeplex?

If yes, uncheck 'Retain object IDs and locations' check box while exporting, you
would be able to change the target.
