How can I connect web parts from a parent and child site

Asked By: Tara    Date: Jan 25    Category: MOSS    Views: 1713

I've been playing with Sharepoint 2007 for a while now and I
have the hang of the basics. However, there are some seemingly
simple things I can't seem to figure out a way to do, or at least
not without a programming degree. Can someone please let me know if
these are even possible, or am I wasting my time?

1. How can I connect web parts from a parent and child site? I can't
find a way.

2. How can I access data from a List or web part on a site in a
different sibling site branch?

3. How can I perform column calculations using the value for
[Today]?

4. Can you use a calculated column to perform a data pull from a DB?

5. How can I create a copy of the EditForm.aspx form and use it? (I
broke my site entirely last time I tried and had to rebuild from
scratch b/c I couldn't edit anything!!)

I will take a few of the questions.

Inline answers

1. How can I connect  web parts  from a parent  and child  site? I can't
find a way.

[->] web  parts connect within the page. I believe you would have to add
a web part to the page pulling in the information from the other site
and then connect to it. All web parts on a page do not have to be
displayed for the connections to work.

No details here. Just some pointers.

2. How can I access data from a List or web part on a site  in a
different sibling site branch?

[->] Content Query works within the site collection.

3. How can I perform column calculations using the value for
[Today]?

[->] create a column named Today as a date type. Use it in the
calculations formula. Delete the Today column. SharePoint does not use
all the Excel variables.

4. Can you use a calculated column to perform a data pull from a DB?

[->] Too much programming for me. I'll leave this one for Mr. Stork.

5. How can I create a copy of the EditForm.aspx form and use it? (I
broke my site entirely last time I tried and had to rebuild from
scratch b/c I couldn't edit anything!!)

[->] I would try copying it from a working server to the same location
on the broken one. As I recall, it is in the _layouts directory.
