How to connect SharePoint on-premise lists to the Office 365 cloud?

I know there are some 3rd party migration tools, but what about side-by-side
integration of SharePoint on-premise and SharePoint Online in the cloud? E.g. we
want to manage a contact list at the employee portal and make some defined
contacts also available in the cloud.

Could you elaborate on the purpose/value of this? Sounds like a decent plan, I
am missing something here.

MetaLogix StoragePoint can help with this. Except not with list level.
