Cannot connect to the server

Asked By: Pankaj    Date: Mar 17    Category: MOSS    Views: 1638

I tried to create a macro that retrieves data from Sharepoint and puts it in
a Pivottable.

I started off with creating an export from the Sharepoint List which
resulted in an .iqy file. I placed this file on our shared (group)drive.
After doing that I used 'data-import' option in MS Excel to import the .iqy
file. Until now everything works fine. From now one two things constantly end
up in an error.

1. When I do manage to import the data and create a pivottable, record these
steps in the macro recorder and then run the macro I get a 'cannot connect to
the server' notification. To resolve this I have to open the Sharepoint List
and rerun the procedure. Then it works, and it's beyond me why this behaviour
occurs.
2. Sometimes during the data-import I get a 'cannot connect to the server'
notification when I choose to create a pivottable in screen 3 of the
data-import wizard.

Could anyone please help me with this, 'cos I'm lost here.

Are you using Excel 2007 and MOSS2007/WSS 3.0?

Here's how to do this without recording any macros.

1. Open the Excel spreadsheet where you want the PivotTable to be inserted
2. In the browser, bring up your SharePoint list  and change to data  Sheet
view (Actions -> Edit in DataSheet)
2. Display the Task Pane (Actions -> Task Pane)
3. Click on Create Excel PivotTable Report
4. In Excel, select where you want to place the PivotTable.
5. Select the fields that you want to display.

Now, when you need to refresh the data. simply go to Data -> Connections ->
Refresh All
