Cannot connect to the configuration database

On Saturday, 3/4, we were working with SQL Server in conjunction with
another application that uses SQL Server. As a result of the problems
we encountered, we uninstalled SQL Server 2000 on the web server where
we run Sharepoint. Then, we reinstalled it. Now, we cannot connect
to Sharepoint at all. We are getting the "Cannot connect to the
congifuration database" error.

We have tried all three of the methods for resolution found on the M/S
Sharepoint support site (the SQL d/b is running, IIS is not running
in IIS 5.0 isolation mode and the account used by the application pool
does have the required permissions to the SQL Server database). As
long as we are talking about the account used by the application pool,
we are under the impression that it is the Network Service account
that is being referred to ... ??
