Is there a way to configure how a Word document opens
from a SharePoint site?

For general internet location, go to "My Computer -
Tools - older Option - File Types", selected DOC as
Registered file types and go to Advanced button, I can
check "Browse in same window". With this setting, Word
opens in the IE browser itself.

But this setting does not control opening Word from
SPS portal.

Is there a way to set the Word file open option from
SharePoint?
