it sounds MSSearch.exe perhaps?

to check whether that is enabled:

log into the server that sql is installed on
open up the sql service manager (the one in the system tray can be double clicked)
where it says sql server by default, change that option to "auto start service when OS starts" and the green arrow to start it.
