Comments required by check-in document

i'm looking for a way to make the comments, when you check in a
document, required. Is this possible ? because this is in Word self.

or is it possible to make a vbscript in Word that does the checkin
and popup a messagebox for the required comment text.

You can set up a document  profile setting up all the mandatory meta data
fields. When they check  the document in, it won't be checked in until all
the mandatory fields are filled in.
The only disadvantage with this approach is that sometimes users just end up
putting junk in the comments  box because it's a required  field...

SPS v2 includes this functionality natively - are you using SPS v1?
