Collaboration Portal Copy

Asked By: Jordan    Date: Sep 05    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 784

Normally when I create a site and want to duplicate it I can save site
as template

I don't know if it is not possible to save a Collaboration portal as a
template, or if it is because it is a top level site for the site
collection, but I have my own branded Collaboration portal that I've
modified for quick roll-out to campus departments, and I don't know how
to duplicate it.

It has to be a collaboration portal because that is the only way I can
figure out how to get all of the types of subsites that I need. There
are enough changes I don't want to have to repeat them for every single

I tried backing up the site collection and restoring it to a new URL but
I get the message that no content database is available. I suspect I
could add a new empty content database, but I would like all the
department site collections to be in the same content database

Every site  collection is assigned a unique ID. SO, when you back it up,
you must restore it into a different content  DB or you will get the
below error.

Is there another way to copy  and deploy a custom-configured
Collaboration portal?

You could try a:

Stsadm.exe -o export http://portal.contoso.msft/sites/Portal -filename
c:\backup\portal1.bak -includeusersecurity -versions 3

If it is more than 10MB, don't forget to increase the default template

Then same command, but use the import option.

You actually want to use Export rather than backup/restore to a
different name on the same server for the reason you specify Ben, i.e.
the site  Collection GUID.

This was known to cause problems in V2, and I suspect the same in V3.

Even though the site can be placed into a different content  database,
the Site GUID is the same and restored into the configuration database
twice. I "Thought" they actually blocked you from doing this in SP2 of

Cannot import site. The exported site  is based on the template STS#0 but
the destination site is based on the template SPS#0. You can import
sites only into sites that are based on same template as the exported

I thought I created them both as Collaboration Portal, I don't
understand why the error
