I would like to know what the code is that is used to modify the
database in SharePoint 2003? Also, how powerful is SharePoint if it
is used as a document library to manage thousands of documents?

My opinion is don’t use SharePoint for heavy duty document management. Go get a tool that is built for that purpose. SharePoint document libraries are a feature of SharePoint that allow for lightweight collaboration and storage of documents, but don’t offer item level /folder level permissions or high security for confidential files. There are also lots of people who are against the use of folders in a document library (I don’t think they are a big deal) who argue the cons against using them. And folders do pose their own unique challenges for organization. To me, SharePoint 2003 is just is not suited for management of thousands of documents.

Wait for SharePoint 2007 for heavy duty document management

I hope you mean api. It's documented in the resource kit. Don't
modify the database. The impact is you won't be supported and you may cause
stability problems.
