Closing Discussion Board Thread

We have a discussion board using Sharepoint 2007 and have a Status
Column with choices Open, Closed. When a discussion is 'Closed' it
only changes the status of the last post and not the entire discussion
thread. Hence, we are unable to report on Open or Closed items
accurately. Is there a solution or workaround for this?
