Client software for Sharepoint

Are there any client software (apart from Browser, Office) needed for
Sharepoint Portal Server 2003? A colleague of mine who has some
experience with SPS 2001 told me we need a client software so we can
work from windows explorer with documents and save them to a document
library. I did not install any client software but I am certainly
able to do that. I have Office 2003 system though. Could someone shed
some light on this? Thanks

In SPS 2001 it was mandatory to have SPS client to do the
document management needs (doc upload, Check in, check-out, publish
etc.). But in SPS 2003 there is no specific client s/w as was present in
SPS 2001. You can do everything with a browse and office 11, which you
can think of it as client tool too!!!

What if you have earlier versions of Office (XP, 2000, etc), do you
need this client software to work with SPS 2003?

In SPS 2001 when the client software is installed the web folders
are upgraded to allow normal windows explorer functions (drag&drop,
copy, move, etc) to parts of a portal(document libraries, etc).
Right?
