Client installation problem

I am experiencing a terrible problem. When I want to load
the SPS client onto workstations (windows2000p) i'm getting
the following error: Installing this product requires the latest version of
the windows installer to be present on the system before running setup.

Does anybody know why? I've got sp2 loaded on the workstations.

Have you maybe installed some other software after installing SP2?
Maybe check support.microsoft.com/.../81.ASP

but for some reason when I run spsclient.msi it installs fine.
