Choosing a different layout page for a subsite

Asked By: Melanie    Date: Jul 26    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 4164

I know that the home page of the portal uses defaultlayout.aspx.
Is it possible for a subsite's default.aspx page to use a different
layout page besides defaultlayout.aspx?
If so, how would one go about making that change?

There are actually several different answers.

First, if Publishing is turned on you can change  which page  is the
default page for a site by using the Welcome Page link under Site
Settings. Simply point the Welcome page at a different page.

If Publishing is Not turned on then you have two choices. You can
replace the default.aspx page in the site with a custom page using
SharePoint designer. Or if you plan it up front you can substitute your
own default.aspx in a custom site definition. Your default.aspx will be
ghosted to the site when provision a new site.

How do I do this?

If you take a look at the site definitions stored out in the 12 hive you
will see that they all tend to have a default.aspx file located in the
root of the site definition subdirectory. In the ONET.xml file that
stores the configurations for the sites there is a module entry that
ghosts that file down to the site when it is provisioned.

If I may add, when creating the customsite definition , can I add a brand new
default masterpage AND a new masterpage for the other pages in my subsite?
I seem to get this feeling that its ONLY a masterpage for the default page  I can
add to the custom site definition..how then do I assign the new masterpage to
the other content pages, not the default.aspx, wht do I need to do?
I use wspbuilder for development.
