Just wondering if anyone has ever developed a chat room feature within MS SharePoint?

I haven't done it but I can certainly imagine a solution where an
existing solution is implemented within a Web Part.

I've thought about this because of a chat  room requirement between two
facilities I support. They're on different networks that only have
two way communications via a filtered e-mail gateway. It's a network
security issue. Why it is that way is a long story, but it's not
something I am in a position to change. Network security and general
bureaucratic inertia rule out deploying any COTS messaging servers (or
even extending the Exchange servers to support Windows Messenger) in
the forseeable future.

I would think that it would be possible to simulate a chat room  by
representing the room as a list on a WSS site and the chat messages
themselves as list items in that list. There would have to be a list
on a WSS site on each network for a given chat room, and the lists
would have to be mirrored via automatically generated and extracted
e-mail messages. I imagine other people out there have developed  ways
to synchronize lists via e-mail messages. We developed the bits to
generate and consume e-mail for other projects, so should be able to
develop the WSS specific parts in house if need be.

I think developing web  part(s) that would choose a chat room (list),
view the current messages (list items), and add a new item to the list
would also be fairly straightforward. What I wonder about is how I
could get a web part  to automatically show updates other people make
to the list without having the browser continuously refresh. Can that
be done in a web part, or would I have to write a standalone C# app
that regularly polls the WSS site's list for updates?

I am not sure about chat  room but wikis and blogs will be a part  of sharepoint  2007. The beta is due out in May.

You might take a look at Office Live Communicator. It offers all of the tools associated with Windows Messenger including presence (who's online?), chat, instant messaging, etc. I believe that there is some level of integration with SharePoint, so you can include certain features within your site. I haven't used it, so cannot verify any of this, but it might be worth checking it out.
