Is it possible for a user to change their own username if I'm using the
AD autocreation mode?

Well unless they had admin priviledges, where could they even go?

As administrator, you would go to Site Settings, Manage Profile Database, View profile properties.

From there, you would choose to edit “PreferredName”, and select “Allow users to edit this property” and “Show on the Edit My Profile page.

All users can then edit their displayname.

However, if you do this, you will see that SharePoint warns you that because this setting is taken from Active Directory, any changes made can get lost when the next update occurs.

If this is something you want users to be able to do, your best bet is to work on some code that updates the Active Directory display name field.
