How to change Portal URL ?

Asked By: Kassandra    Date: Apr 25    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 2984

We have been using the SPS 2003 as our Intranet for few months.

Now the Management has decided a name for the Portal and hence the
default Portal URL should be changed from say
http://existingurl/default.aspx" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://existingurl/default.aspx to new URL http://newurl/default.aspx." target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://newurl/default.aspx.
Currently, our Portal URL consists of Server name, but we do not want
to change the Server name, as it hosts other applications too.

We want that from now on, even if users type
http://existingurl/default.aspx" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://existingurl/default.aspx, they should be redirected to
http://newurl/default.aspx." target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://newurl/default.aspx. Same for all the sub-areas.

Please suggest what is the best way to go about doing this.

Add a host header (newurl) in IIS to your virtual server that is hosting
your portal  site. Make sure that its name can be resolved to the same IP
address as "existingurl" and, lastly, add an alternate url  through
SharePoint Central Admin so that search results will reflect the same
URL that was used to access the portal.

I believe you can easier do this with DNS aliases.

You'll also want to make sure that alternate URL mappings are done on the SPS
server so that it accepts requests under the new URL...
